Denver finds first rabies-positive bats of 2025 in Sloan Lake, Highlands neighborhoods

Denver (KSVR) – The bats in Denver neighborhoods have proven positive for scars earlier this month, which represents the first two positive cases of 2025 in the city, according to Denver for animal protection.

The first positive bats of rabies in Denver were found on July 8 in the Sloan Lake neighborhood, according to a DAP journalist. A family in the highlands reported positive bats in rabies on July 17.

DAP warned Denver to be careful after discovery because rabies, a viral disease that affects the nervous system, is always fatal if symptoms develop.

Raby disease is in saliva for animals and is commonly transferred to people and pets through bites of rabid animals. For bats, small teeth may cause bites without anyone noticing them.

“This is why it is important for the pet owners to keep their animals to update their vaccines,” said DAP.

DAP also recommended people to:

  • Avoid all contact with bats and other wild animals.
  • Do not sleep with windows or open or uncompromising doors.
  • If the bats were seen inside the Denver’s house or any other structure, close the area and call DAP.
  • Do not leave pet food outside as they will attract wild animals.
  • Immediately wash all animal bites with soap and water, flow the wound well, then call your doctor. If you are in contact with a positive animal to combat the dog, you may start to prevent after exposure (PEP), which can prevent the development of rabies.
  • Report all animal bites or scratches to DAP.

DAP said the bats are common in Colorado, and that the agency regularly picks up bats from people’s homes throughout the summer.

Any racket, scratching, raccoon, bats, wolf, or fox, who was in contact with a pet or dealt with by someone should be eliminated, so no one who faces one of these animals should come close and retain a safe distance.

DAP said that he is testing any bats that have confirmed or suspected of contacting a person or a pet, but if there is no connection, he will make bats to the wilderness.
