Denver, facing over $200M budget gap, will begin layoffs on Aug. 18

Denver (KDVR) – Denver employees and the boycott of the higher notifications will witness during the August 18 week, according to the mayor’s office, which indicated budget problems.

“These are not easy days, and these are not easy decisions,” Mayor Mike Johnston wrote to the city and the boycott in a letter sent on Tuesday. “Every role in this city is important, and everyone has contributed to these roles in our city in meaningful ways.”

The number of affected employees has not been shared. In May, the Denver mayor’s office said that the city’s employees will face the vacation in the face of a $ 50 million revenue gap and a deficit of 200 million dollars. He also indicated that the city witnessed 0.3 % growth, which is less than the previous growth of 5 % of the city before 2024.

Johnston wrote to the city’s employees on Tuesday: “As I participated in March, the constant slowdown in the economy that we see locally and nationally has affected the city’s budget deeply, and we need to build a budget that suits the revenues we possess.”

Johnston said he is still committed to “protecting the basic city services and providing higher population priorities while preventing workers’ demobilization in every possible case.”

This advertisement also follows a vote by the Denver Job Services Council to eliminate the September Display System in favor of the merit -based approach. At that time, workers’ layoffs were not announced, but the workers gathered to the change that was then offered to the demobilization of workers.

Johnston said that all workers’ layoffs will be presented during one week that begins on August 18. The employees will receive the last working day on the same day that they are notified of their demobilization, and then they will be granted 30 days in evaluation of the paid administrative leave. During that time, salaries and benefits will be received, including coral dues.

The city said that the date of the official separation will be 31 days after receiving the notification. Medicine, teeth and vision will continue until September 30 for separate employees.

City announces the separation packages of workers’ demobilization in August

The city has determined the separation packages on the basis of employee service lengths with the city. The city also said that the separation will be in addition to 30 days of the paid administrative leave.

Duration of service  to cut
After the test, less than one year 1 payment period (two weeks of payment)
One year to less than 5 years 2 payment periods (4 weeks of wage)
5 years to less than 15 years 3 payment periods (6 weeks of wage)
15 years or more 4 payment periods (8 weeks of wage)

After the employees signed the separation agreement, they will receive the payment within 14 days after their work is officially completed. The city indicated that the employees who are subject to monitoring or who retire, as well as employees upon request, are not entitled to be able to separate.

The city stated in its announcement: “In addition, the Severance package will also include a salary equal to one month of the city’s share of medical insurance.” “This will enable any employee to keep health care coverage for at least 60 days after notifying workers.

Other support for Denver employees during the demobilization of workers

The city said that the Workforce Development Department of the Ministry of Economic Development and the opportunity has established a team to assist in the transfer of employment to lay off workers in Denver.

“This team will support the affected employees from the day of separation, and it provides personal support and opportunities to search for work and training opportunities, and help in unemployment files and mental health resources,” Johnston wrote.

He also indicated that the city published a guide to separate workers’ demobilization The city’s website is available here.
