Dead fish at Mueller likely caused by low oxygen levels, city says

KXAN – KXAN viewers continued last week asking about a large number of dead fish they saw in Baraka near the airport and Muller streets. We arrived in Austin on August 8 to find out more.

On Monday, we heard from Austin Watershed Protection, or AWP. She said that her workers went to Meller Lake Park from August 10 to investigate dead fish.

“We have decided that fish are likely to have died due to the low levels of dissolved oxygen (DO) in the water quality pool, not pollutants draining,” an AWP spokesman said in an email on Monday. “DO levels can decrease due to many factors, including high temperatures and direct sunlight.”

While fish live underwater, they still require oxygen, like most organisms. The respiratory system systems to extract oxygen from water have evolved.

According to AWP, the Property Management Company estimated that 500 dead fish were removed from the lake last week.

“No additional dead fish was noticed during the weekend,” AWP said.

AWP asks anyone who sees the potential water pollution by contact 311. He said that his team is ready to inspect fears “24 hours a day/7 days a week.”
