Firefighters extinguished a rapid and devastating fire that tore through a row of commercial buildings in a Los Angeles neighborhood early Saturday morning.
The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed that at approximately 5 a.m., crews were dispatched to 2311 Southwest Drive in Hyde Park for a “major emergency fire.”
Los Angeles Police indicated that several nearby commercial buildings were found on fire when firefighters arrived at the scene Emergency alert.
A department spokesperson confirmed further details to KTLA, noting that crews immediately went into “offensive mode with a highly aggressive fire attack.”
“The fire expanded at a rapid pace and crews went into a defensive mode and pulled all firefighters outside for safety,” LAFD Assistant Chief Lewis explained. “The roofs of many buildings containing a lot of building materials have collapsed.”
Officials say firefighters fought valiantly to control the flames, and the fire was eventually extinguished within an hour and 19 minutes.
“Main flows enabled firefighters to fight the fire from outside the buildings, keeping all members safe as partial roof collapse began approximately 30 minutes after the incident,” LAFD said in a statement. Later alert Released around 6am
Investigators have not yet determined the cause of the fire.
Crews will remain at the scene to conduct “extended repair operations,” officials said.
