Gauff is seeded second at the 2025 China Open and began her campaign in the second round after receiving a bye in the first round. She faced Kamilla Rakhimova in her opening match, winning in straight sets with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-0.

Amid her campaign in Beijing, Gauff’s mother, Candi, shared a couple of pictures of the World No. 3. In one image, Candi described Gauff as her “beautiful daughter,” and in the other, she expressed her love for her.

Before participating in the 2025 China Open, Gauff competed at the US Open, where she defeated Ajla Tomljanović, Donna Vekić, and Magdalena Fręch before losing to Naomi Osaka in the fourth round.

At the 2025 China Open, Fernandez began her campaign in the second round after receiving a first-round bye. In her opening match, she faced Maria Sakkari and triumphed in straight sets, winning with a scoreline of 6-2, 6-0, advancing her to the third round against Gauff.

The Canadian is also participating in the doubles event in Beijing alongside Jaqueline Cristian. In their opening match, they will first face the pair of Lyudmyla Kichenok and Ellen Perez.

Gauff and Fernandez have faced each other twice on the WTA Tour, with the World No. 3 winning both encounters. Their most recent match took place in the third round of the 2025 Australian Open, where Gauff won with a scoreline of 6-4, 6-2.

The winner of the third-round match between Gauff and Fernandez at the 2025 China Open will advance to face one of four players in the fourth round: 15th seed Belinda Bencic, 22nd seed Jeļena Ostapenko, qualifier Katie Volynets, or qualifier Priscilla Hon.
