(Kron)-A 28-year-old man from Berkeley was arrested on Friday after he claimed that he threw a live hand grenade from a mobile car while trying to escape from the high road patrol officers in California.
CHP officers tried to stop the suspect, Carlos Kossiga, near 38 Street and Cityto Street in Auckland at around 3:30 pm on Friday, after he saw him driving a stolen car.
“When the officers tried to stop the car, Kossiga fled, and that was pursued,” said CHP. “The pursuit moved at slow speeds through Auckland and entered the city of Berkeley.”
During the chase, Kuceja was seen throwing a bag of the driver’s side window near the Martin Luther King Jr. And Rose Street in Berkeley. A nearby officer stopped checking the bag and found the bomb.
“When looking at the interior, the officer noticed what it seems to be a manual bomb with partially removing the safety pin,” said CHP. “The officers immediately informed the Berkeley Police Department of their discovery and asked for help in securing the area.”
The officers turned traffic from the area and the houses were evacuated, as the authorities secured the bomb. The elimination team of explosive munitions at the University of California in Berkeley responded to the area and got the bomb, and the area was cleared by 5 pm
Kuceja eventually turned into a dead end and tried to escape from the officers on foot. The officers caught up with Kossiga and took it to the reservation.
“After taking Kosija to reservations, the officers secured the car and began evacuating the residents from the area,” said Kosija. “The UCPD team responded to the stalk termination point and decided that there were no additional explosives in the car. The residents were allowed to return to their homes after 5 pm directly.”
CHP said that investigators searched a multi -unit house on California Street, where Kuceja was illegally living. No other explosives were found. Other houses were evacuated in the building and closed California Street in front of the housing until the search was completed. Residents were allowed to return to their homes at approximately 10:30 pm
The California Highway patrol said that Kuceja was booked at Santa Rita Prison in Dublin on charges of a felony possession and transportation of a devastating device, possession of a stolen vehicle, fleeing the police and resisting arrest.
