Cairo Pushes for De-Escalation as Al-Sisi Speaks with Iranian President Pezeshkian

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi held a Phone call On Friday, March 13, with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian amid escalating regional tensions, they reaffirmed Egypt’s rejection of the attacks targeting several Arab countries, and urged an immediate return to diplomacy.

According to the official spokesman for the Presidency, Ambassador Mohamed El-Shenawy, President Sisi affirmed “Egypt’s condemnation and categorical rejection” of Iran’s targeting of the Gulf states, as well as Jordan and Iraq. The Egyptian President stressed that these countries did not support or participate in the war against Iran, but instead worked to ease tensions and support negotiations between Iran and the United States aimed at resolving the crisis diplomatically.

During the call, President Sisi stressed Egypt’s commitment to the principle of good neighborliness and called for an immediate cessation of attacks in order to prevent further destabilization throughout the region. He also expressed Egypt’s regret over the current escalation and warned of its potential consequences for regional security and the well-being of the people of the Middle East.

The Egyptian President stressed Cairo’s ongoing efforts to contain the crisis and return all parties to negotiations, stressing the importance of flexibility in order to achieve a diplomatic breakthrough.

For his part, President Pezeshkian expressed his appreciation for Egypt’s diplomatic efforts and Sisi’s role in working to defuse tension. The Iranian President reiterated his country’s participation in the rounds of negotiations related to its nuclear program, stressing Tehran’s interest in maintaining fraternal and good-neighborly relations with Arab countries.

The two leaders discussed potential ways to end the escalation, with President Sisi affirming Egypt’s readiness to intensify mediation efforts. He stressed that political and diplomatic solutions remain the only viable way to resolve the crisis.

The Egyptian President also stressed the importance of all parties respecting international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter, including the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states and the principle of non-interference in internal affairs.

This call reflects Cairo’s continued role as a regional mediator at a time of rising tensions, as Egypt seeks to balance strong opposition to attacks on Arab countries with its long-standing call for dialogue and diplomatic engagement.
