How the Buccaneers Are Customizing Rookie Shilo Sanders’ Helmet
In a video posted to social media, the Buccaneers gave fans a detailed look at how they build helmets for their rookies, including defensive back Shilo Sanders. “Did you know we 3D scan our rookies’ heads for their new helmets?” the team captioned the clip.
The process begins well before a rookie steps onto the field.
“The first thing we do when we find out we’re getting a rookie player, we call their former school, and we’ll ask them to send any size information they have,” said a member of Tampa Bay’s equipment staff in the video. “Once we get them in the building, we’ll do a head scan — gives us the opportunity to buy them a customized helmet, which makes the inside fit exactly the way their head is shaped.”
After the base helmet is built, players get to personalize it. From face masks to visors to chin straps, each detail can be customized. Some players opt for unique face masks, while others prefer red or chrome visors in practice. On game day, though, NFL rules require players to wear clear shields.

Even minor changes can impact the fit. Something as small as a haircut can require an adjustment.
“It’s probably the best practice just to do another head scan,” the staffer added. “You can order a new helmet for them and have the insides customized to his head.”
Shilo Sanders’ Footwork Is Drawing Major Buzz
Helmet ready or not, it’s Sanders’ footwork that’s really starting to turn heads at camp.
A recent clip from training camp caught the attention of fans and coaches alike — not because of his size or speed, but because of his control.
His movement stands out. Sanders stays grounded, shifts direction smoothly, and maintains balance through each step. It’s a sign of a player who understands spacing and reads plays instinctively — the kind of football IQ that doesn’t show up in a 40-yard dash.
Coaches have taken notice. His technique looks sharper, and it’s clear he’s put in the work to improve. Every rep, every drill shows more purpose. He’s not just running the plays — he’s refining every movement. And that’s starting to pay off.
A Sign of What’s to Come in Tampa Bay?
As the preseason ramps up, there’s growing optimism that Sanders could surprise people. His polish and consistency have stood out — two qualities that often separate rookies who flash from those who stick.
He’s showing up with the right mindset and a detail-driven approach that suggests he’s serious about earning a role. If his footwork continues to progress, Tampa Bay might’ve quietly added a difference-maker to their secondary.
