Bill that would ban cellphones in Texas public schools heads to Gov. Greg Abbott’s desk

Austin (Texas Tribune-A draft law prohibits Texas K-12 students from the use of mobile phones in the school to the office of the governor of Gregbout, with the appointment of local educational areas to determine how to implement the new rule.

The House Law 1481, which MP Caroline fairly submitted from Ammarilo, is seeking to restrict the use of “personal wireless communications devices” in K-12 schools. The Senate in Texas unanimously approved Sunday. He also received overwhelming support in the House of Representatives, which voted 136-10 for approval in April.

Under the draft law, students will not be allowed to use their mobile phones during the school day. Educational areas will decide where students can store their phones, such as safe bags, cabinets, charging stations or back bags. Policy also requires schools to have disciplinary measures in force for students who break the rules, including the possibility of confiscating their phones. Students who need their phones for medical reasons or safety will be allowed to keep them.

If the ruler signs it, the draft law will become a law on September 1. Texas will join many other states that have already imposed similar policies, including California, Florida, Minnesota, Indiana, Ouhayu, Arkansas, Louisiana, Varjenia and South Carolina. 26 other states have suggested a ban, and some educational areas in Texas have already developed policy.

Supporters argue that mobile phones constitute a great distraction in the class and can harm the mental health of students. This research supports this, which indicates that the use of excessive phone can interfere with students’ ability to focus and engage in class.

To some extent, the only Gen Z member in Texas House said that she directly understands the negative impact of social media on students.

“When you see what is pushed on the social media and the distraction that causes it in the semester, there is a need for a government to support teachers,” said Tribune in Texas in March.

Another common argument in favor of the bill is the ability to reduce bullying. According to PEW Research, 44 % of parents who support the ban is a decrease in electronic bullying as a major cause.

Critics are concerned that the ban on phones may make it difficult for parents to communicate with their children during the school day. Others are concerned about the safety of students, arguing that in an emergency, students should be able to reach their phones to seek help.
