The reunion comes just weeks before the film — which was originally directed by legendary director Gary Marshall — is about to begin previews on its Broadway adaptation. The film focused on Midler’s C.C. Bloom and Hershey’s Hillary Whitney, who meet in the 1950s at the Jersey Shore, and follows their friendship over the years as one becomes a famous singer and actress and the other a human rights lawyer.

Speaking to People in 2024, Midler discussed the filming of Beaches, calling it “an incredibly happy set” and praising Marshall for creating that work environment.

“He had such a talent for pulling together, and he had all these cameos,” she said at the time. “He had all his actor improv friends come and do cameos in these movies, in his movies. They were absolutely worth the price of admission.”

The Broadway adaptation begins previews on March 27 with opening night expected on April 22. Jessica Vosk and Kelli Barrett star in the musical, having originated the roles during its 2024 world premiere at Theatre Calgary in Canada.
