Ben Shelton Shares His Father’s Enthusiasm for Trinity Rodman’s Return
Trinity Rodman had missed several months of soccer due to a back issue and made her comeback in Washington Spirit’s match against the Portland Thorns. The 23-year-old had a match to remember as she scored a late winner to seal a 2-1 win for her team.
Shelton provided a look into his family’s support for Rodman amid her return from injury. On his Instagram story, the World No. 7 posted a screenshot from a family group chat where his father reminded everyone of the broadcast details for Rodman’s upcoming game, writing:
“Trinity playing on Channel 18, 12:30,” followed by “Or channel 26.”
Shelton’s caption read: “My pops 🔒’d in on Trin’s first game back 😂.”
Trinity Rodman has often accompanied Ben Shelton at some of his recent tournaments, including Wimbledon and the Citi DC Open.
A Look at Ben Shelton’s Run at the Canadian Open
Following a semifinal exit at the Citi DC Open in Washington, Shelton traveled to Toronto to compete at the Canadian Open. Seeded fourth at the tournament, the American received a bye to the second round, where he faced Adrian Mannarino. Shelton produced a fine performance and won 6-2, 6-3 to progress to the third round.
Here, he faced 25th seed Brandon Nakashima and the two played out a thrilling encounter. Nakashima won the opening set via a tiebreak but Shelton dominated the second set and won it 6-2 to force the match into a decider. The World No. 7 was broken in the opening game of the final set but he broke back just a few games later.
Shelton had two match points during the fifth game but Nakashima saved them and held his serve to level the score at 7-5. The set eventually went to a tiebreak and Nakashima saved another three match points before Shelton closed out the match to register a 6-7(8), 6-2, 7-6(5) win and book his place in the fourth round.

Here, the World No. 7 will lock horns with 13th seed Flavio Cobolli, who has a 2-1 head-to-head lead over him. However, Shelton came out on top the last time the two met on court, winning 7-6(4), 7-6(4) in the first round of the Mexican Open in Acapulco. Whoever out of the two Americans comes out on top, will face ninth seed Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinals of the Canadian Open.
