Bear that broke into Aspen gym also drank business's protein shakes

ASPEN, Colo. (KDVR) – These are not your average bodybuilding bears.

The owner of Ajax Fitness in Aspen says two black bears broke into his business Tuesday night into Wednesday, drinking protein shakes, among other things, and causing chaos in the gym.

David Mills, owner of Ajax Fitness, says surveillance video actually shows one of the bears pulling on the door to get inside.

“This guy really put in the effort to get into this gym,” Mills said.

The bears drank the protein shake and ate some of the protein shake. One of the Bears is already back for the second round, Mills said.

“There was chocolate milk all over the entire gym!” Mills participated.

He said he alerted Colorado Parks and Wildlife, which told FOX31 that bears in and around Aspen are currently trying to rack up as many pounds as possible, and sightings may be more common. It is estimated that bears need 20,000 to 24,000 calories per day to gain weight in the winter.

With the help of CPW, the city installed an electric teddy bear door mat in the gym. Mills estimates the loss for a protein producer ranges from $400 to $500.

No bears or humans were injured.
