As usual, this offseason for the Los Angeles Lakers has been filled with drama, trade rumors, feud potential, and a few free-agent signings and head-scratching moves. The franchise is reportedly building around Luka Dončić, with LeBron James’ name being thrown around in a number of different trades to various franchises.
Caught up in the mix is budding star Austin Reaves. While he has excelled playing alongside both James and Dončić, rumors have swirled that Reaves didn’t enjoy playing alongside the Slovenian star.
Reaves’ agent, Aaron Reilly, cleared the air about the Lakers’ backcourt duo.
Austin Reaves’ Agent Claims Reaves ‘Enjoys Playing Alongside Luka Dončić’
Reilly, as reported by Lakers insider Trevor Lane, addressed concerns Lakers fans may have regarding the backcourt duo.
“Austin has nothing but the utmost respect for Luka and truly enjoys playing alongside him,” Reilly said, per Lane. “Any suggestion to the contrary is completely false. He’s excited to be on the court with Luka, both now and in the future.”

After Dončić’s stunning trade to the Lakers, many wondered how Reaves would fit, given that James and Dončić often need to have the ball in their hands to excel offensively. As it turns out, Reaves had the most productive year in his young career playing with Dončić in the second half of the season.
While some credit goes to Reaves’ personal growth as a player, Dončić has a tendency to make those around him excel with his vision and command on offense. Reaves averaged 20.2 points, 5.8 assists, and 4.5 rebounds per game this season, all increases from last year.
Although Reaves declined his $14.9 million player option for the 2026-27 season, as well as a four-year, $89.2 million extension from the Lakers, the belief is that he would like to remain with the team on a larger salary in the $30 million-per-year range. With James nearing the end of his career, it is imperative for the Lakers to secure their future by signing Reaves and Dončić to long-term extensions.
With recent signings Deandre Ayton and Jake LaRavia, the Lakers hope they have enough for another run at a championship even after James’ playing days are over.
