Atmospheric river incoming: Inches of rain possible in Bay Area this week

(KRON) – An atmospheric river could drop 1 to 2 inches of rain on the Bay Area between Wednesday and Friday, according to the latest forecast from the National Weather Service.

Higher areas in the North Bay and Santa Cruz Mountains have a 60% to 90% chance of seeing 2 inches or more of rain this week, according to the National Weather Service. Heavy rain is also possible along Big Sur.

The Interior Valleys and South Bay will likely see 1.5 inches of rain or less. The NWS expects a 10% to 30% chance these areas will see up to 2 inches of rain this week.

“Given this atmospheric river, rain-shaded valleys may receive much less in terms of precipitation,” the NWS forecast says. “Southerly winds will increase ahead of the cold front, but the exact strength of these winds remains in doubt. However, we expect the strongest winds to be along the coast and at higher elevations throughout the region.”

There is also a slight chance of thunderstorms between Wednesday and Thursday.

“Rainfall totals will continue to become more pronounced as this system approaches in time, so be sure to keep up with the latest forecasts,” the NWS Bay Area office wrote on social media. “Take advantage of the nice weather between now and Tuesday and finish any outdoor preparations before midweek.”

KRON4 will continue to monitor the latest weather conditions as the storm approaches.
