Denver (KDVR)-Arvada has announced this week that it has chosen and approved to buy an alternative site for the Arvada water treatment plant, which is about 50 years old.
The city said on Thursday that the new site is located west of the 93rd highway and West 66th Parkway in 6809 State Highway 93.
The land will be included in the city as part of the acquisition, according to the city, which said that this represents an “important step forward” in planning the long -term infrastructure.
“As ARVADA continues to focus on being adaptable and ready future, guaranteeing safe and reliable water for our society is still a top priority,” Jacqueline Rhodes, director of the city’s infrastructure, said in a statement. “The purchase of this land is a major milestone in our commitment to updating the critical infrastructure while planning a responsibility for upcoming contracts.”
the Water treatment plant replacement project It is funded by bonds, customer prices, fees and fees for developing the system paid from developers, instead of the dollar of public taxes, according to the city.
The city said that many “main factors” entered the site, including:
- Low groundwater potential, reduce long -term construction and maintenance costs.
- The shape of the property that allows the easiest construction and planning of an effective location.
- The minimum disorder in the natural Viewscape in the region.
- Better terrain for construction and operations.
- The size of the property that provides flexibility for future expansions or new processing processes with the development of technology and regulations.
- The height that enables the delivery of water by gravity to most of the city, which increases the elasticity with fewer pump stations.
The city said that the site will provide financial and operational advantages at the present time, as well as “the space and the ability to adapt necessary to serve the community for future generations.”
“The final site, which has been chosen, meets many important criteria that make it the most cost -effective option and operational equipment in the long term,” the city said in a statement.
The construction is expected to start at the new water treatment plant next year, according to the city, which said that the new factory has an expected operating date in 2030 and aims to continue “for decades.”
The current Arvada water treatment plant was built in 1979 and was designed only for seasonal use, according to the city, which said the facility “is close to the end of its useful life.”
Amid the site selection process, the city said it conducted a “study of sites” in 2023 that included the participation of society. The city said that the main topics that arose from society included the effectiveness of cost and the preservation of the open space and “ensuring safe and reliable water delivery.”
The city said that it looked at renewing or rebuilding on the current site, but in the end it decided that doing this was not an applicable option, because doing this was more expensive and the design challenges or flexibility challenges were resolved.
