The transfer portal has reshaped college football, and one of the most intriguing shifts in 2025 involves quarterbacks Joey Aguilar and Nico Iamaleava. In a rare exchange of starters, Iamaleava departed Tennessee for UCLA, while Aguilar moved from UCLA to Tennessee.
The unusual switch has prompted questions about how the two view each other after essentially trading places. According to reports, UCLA decided in April, choosing Iamaleava over Aguilar for the starting role after Iamaleava opted to leave Tennessee.
Joey Aguilar and Nico Iamaleava: Friends or Rivals After Their Transfer Portal School Swap?
There is no clear indication that Joey Aguilar and Nico Iamaleava were ever friends before their highly publicized quarterback swap, nor is there evidence of hostility. Aguilar’s time at UCLA was brief, lasting only a few months, and his exit came quickly once Iamaleava chose the Bruins.
In April 2025, Iamaleava, a five-star recruit who had guided Tennessee to the 2024 College Football Playoff, startled the sport by transferring. Reports linked his departure to disputes over NIL arrangements.
Seeking to be “closer to home” in California, he committed to UCLA. Aguilar, who had transferred from Appalachian State to UCLA in December 2024, suddenly faced the reality that the Bruins were choosing Iamaleava as their starter.
Aguilar re-entered the portal and, by April 29, committed to Tennessee, stepping directly into the vacancy Iamaleava left behind.

The move has often been described as college football’s first quarterback “trade,” sparking debate over which program ultimately benefited. For Aguilar, the shift meant going from UCLA’s projected starter for a short offseason window to leading Tennessee’s offense against elite defenses.
After Tennessee’s matchup with Georgia on September 13, he declined to disparage his former program.
“The main goal is this team, and not just me,” Aguilar said. “I know it’s a great story and stuff like that, but my main focus is to do my job and help my team win games.”
Aguilar delivered a memorable performance that day despite Tennessee’s overtime defeat. He completed all 14 of his passes in the opening quarter, slicing through Georgia’s defense for 371 passing yards, four touchdowns, and an additional rushing score.
His aggressive style also showed in two interceptions, one nearly turning disastrous before Chris Brazzell II snatched a contested ball for a touchdown that reignited Tennessee’s offense.

On the other side of the swap, Iamaleava defended his decision, saying before the season that family reasons motivated the move. Critics noted he left a playoff contender and a proven quarterback developer in Josh Heupel for a struggling Power Four program. After a blowout loss to New Mexico, he admitted, “we’re not playing at our best.”
As Aguilar surges in Knoxville and Iamaleava adjusts in Los Angeles, their careers remain intertwined. While not personal rivals, their transfer decisions ensure ongoing comparisons in what has become one of the most unique quarterback storylines of the season.
