KDVR – Andrea Quinar walks her dog, Jack, every day in the Thornton neighborhood. I was surprised when Jack recently returned home with ticks.
“I was here six years ago and I did not see a sign, and we were walking in this long grass here two weeks ago and I found a surprise on his face, then I found three others,” said Quinar.
Employees of veterinary clinics in the region say they are not alone.
“We are witnessing an increase in tick,” Britney Hartmann said at the Indian Try Hospital in Arvada. “I would like to say that we have at least one call a day, if not a single date per day, regarding the signs.”
She said that many pet owners were surprised.
“Many people think that the ticks are not in Colorado, or that you have to walk long distances to find them, and this is not the case. They are in our neighborhoods. They are in open spaces. They are everywhere. So, we definitely want to make sure that our pets are protected.”
There are a lot of medicines available and veterinarians in the hospital, and preventing tick bite is essential.
“They are spreading the disease.”
If a pet owner finds a mark, Weblan says it is important to remove the whole body and its head.
She said: “If you only pull the body and leave the head there, this can create infections and things, and for this reason I recommend bringing them so that we can do this for you.”
According to the extension of the Colorado State University, the Rocky Mountain Wood brand is the most active in Colorado, and a tick in Colorado is the most common disease.
Their site on the web says that there was no confirmed case of Lyme disease that arose with the tick bite in Colorado.
