Air district fines East Bay refinery nearly $375k for violations

(KRON) – The Gulf Air District fined Marathon Martinez Refinery nearly $375,000 for violations that occurred, the agency said Thursday.

The refinery, a subsidiary of Tesoro Refining, was fined $372,500 for 13 violations including tank violations, reporting delays and unapproved pieces of equipment at the on-site gas distribution facility, the air district said.

All violations have been corrected.

“By addressing these violations, the Marathon Martinez Refinery will reduce excess emissions in the future,” the air district said Thursday. “This penalty also incentivizes Marathon Martinez Refinery to pay increased attention to inspection and maintenance at its facility located in unincorporated Contra Costa County, near Martinez.”

In August, the facility agreed to implement a new fence monitoring system to detect hydrogen sulfide and other pollutants at six points along its perimeter. The company also agreed to pay a fine of $75,000. Contra Costa Health reported that a three-day fire at the refinery in February was found to contain chemicals that can cause cancer and heart and lung disease.

A portion of the money raised from the refinery will be used in the community to reduce pollution, according to the air district.
