ABC13’s Athlete of the Week is senior and football star Johnny Hebert; a University of Houston Fall 2026 commit

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – It’s the best of both worlds for Strick Jesuit College Preparatory senior Johnny Hebert.

“It really prepares you for the future, for college, and even beyond,” Hebert said of Strake Jesuit.

He is an excellent student, getting all A’s and B’s in the semester.

“I’ve always loved English classes here. I’ve always been a maths guy,” he said.

In addition to being a scholar in the classroom, Johnny competes on the field and produces rushing yards that are rarely seen.

“I have five brothers, so we play football in the street every day,” Hebert said. “I’m thankful for my older brother, he’s three years older than me, and because I played against him, I think it really helped me develop motivation and a love for the sport.”

In 2024, he ran for 3,542 yards, the most in the state and second in the nation.

“With a set of siblings, you learn very quickly that it’s not just about you,” he said.

This year, work will resume where it stopped a year ago. He ran for 1,933 yards and 24 touchdowns in just seven games.

“I think if you’re just playing the game to put up good stats, you’re not playing the right sport, like football isn’t the right sport for you,” Hibbert said. “It’s a team sport. You can’t do what you do without other people doing what they do. It’s a selfless sport. I try to keep that mentality when I play.”

After his official visit concluded, Johnny committed to the University of Houston in the fall.

Q: “Is this what you hoped it would be?

A: It really is. Everything I hoped for and more.”

He told ABC13 he’s excited to play at home and appreciates the relationship he’s built with running backs coach Jordy Joseph.

“The relationship he took the time to build with me means a lot to me,” he said. “I already saw him as a family member, and now he’s almost like an uncle.”

“What sets the program apart is the culture they have,” Hebert said.

“I think Coach Fitz has done an incredible job building that at Harvard, and I can’t wait to be a part of it.”
