Islamabad (AP)-India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire on Saturday after it spoke with the United States to end the most dangerous military confrontation between nuclear armed competitors for decades, but they accused each other of violating the deal after just hours.
The ceasefire was expected to lead to a rapid end to weeks of escalating clashes, including missile strikes and drones, caused by the mass shooting of tourists last month that India blames Pakistan, which denies the charge. However, multiple explosions were heard in two large cities of cashmere, which is controlled by Indian, hours after the countries agreed to the deal.
“There were repeated violations of understanding that arrived between the two countries,” said Indian Foreign Minister Vikram Maysri late on Saturday.
“We call on Pakistan to take appropriate steps to address these violations and deal with the situation seriously and responsibly,” he said at a news conference in New Delhi. Maysari said that the Indian army was “taking revenge” when he called “storming the border.”
In Islamabad, the Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs blamed the Indian forces for violating the ceasefire. The ministry said that Pakistan is still committed to the agreement and that its forces deal with the situation with responsibility and restrictions.
The ministry said: “We believe that any problems with smooth implementation of the ceasefire should be addressed by communicating at the appropriate levels.”
The first word of the armistice by US President Donald Trump, who was published on the social truth platform that India and Pakistan agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire: “Congratulations to both countries on the use of sound sense and great intelligence. Thank you for your interest in this issue!”
Pakistani Prime Minister Shaybaz Sharif said in a speech on Saturday that his country agreed to a ceasefire in the interest of the greatest peace in the region and hopes that all distinguished issues with India, including a long -term conflict over the Kashmir region, will be resolved through a peaceful dialogue.
Maysari said that the head of military operations from both countries spoke on Saturday afternoon and agreed that “both sides will stop all launch and military action on the ground, in the air and the sea.”
However, hours after the agreement, the explosions that the residents heard in Srenajar and Jamo followed in Kashmir, which is controlled by Indian, the power outage in the two cities. There were no immediate reports on losses.
Omar Abdullah, the highest official in the region, said in a post on social media.
Work for a broader agreement
The conflict between India and Pakistan is not rare, as the two countries have been periodically involved in wars, clashes and skirmishes since independence from British India in 1947.
The ceasefire came in the latest hostilities after the countries launched from the cross -border missile strikes on Saturday, when India said it had targeted the Pakistani air bases after Islamabad launched many high -speed missiles in the military and civil infrastructure in Punjab. Pakistan said it had responded with reprisals.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that he and Vice President JD Vance have participated with senior officials from both countries over the past 48 hours. Among them are Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sherif, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of India, Supramani, Gaeshanskar, and the Pakistani President of the Army Staff, Ashm Munir.
Rubio said that the two governments agreed to “start talks on a wide range of cases in a neutral site.”
Although the Pakistanis initially celebrated revenge on their army, they were later cheerful about the armistice, saying it was a moment of pride and national comfort days after the tension.
In Islamabad, Zabida Bibi expressed her joy to restore peace with India.
“The war only brings suffering,” she said. “We are happy that calm is back. It seems like a feast for me. We won.”
Commercial strikes before the ceasefire
Tensions have risen since the attack on a famous tourist site in Kashmir, which is controlled by an Indian, left 26 murderous civilians, most of whom were Indian Hindu tourists, on April 22.
Before reaching the ceasefire, the Indian army said that Pakistan targeted health facilities and schools in its three air bases in Kashmir early on Saturday and that India fired missile strikes. They targeted the Nour Khan Air Force Base in Rawalbandi, a fierce city, near the capital, Islamabad, and the air base in Chakwal, and the Ravenic Air Force Base in Jang County in the eastern Punjab province, according to the Pakistani military spokesman.
The Pakistan Army said it launched retaliatory strikes against an Indian missile storage facility and air bases in the cities of Pathancott and Udhampur.
The Associated Press independently was unable to verify all the procedures attributed to Pakistan or India.
After announcing the Pakistani revenge, the Indian -controlled residents said that they had heard out loud explosions in multiple places, including Sinaigar, Jamo and Odhampur.
“The explosions that we hear today differ from those that we heard last night during the drone attacks,” said Shish Paul Fayed, the former chief police official in the region and Jamo resident. “It looks like a war here.”
Residents who live near Srinjar Airport, also an air base, said they were defeated by the booming explosions and sound of aircraft.
“I was already awake, but the explosions took my children out of their sleep. They started crying,” said Mohamed Yassin, a resident of Srinagar.
Omar Abdullah, the supreme official in Kashmir, welcomed the ceasefire. But he said if that happened two or three days ago, “We may have avoided bloodshed and the loss of precious lives.”
