There’s a new and interesting comp for Seattle Seahawks third-round pick Jalen Milroe: New Orleans Saints do-everything player Taysom Hill.
Multiple analysts see a direct comparison, especially for Milroe’s rookie season, when he’s expected to be spending a lot of time learning the pro game. Analysts are speculating that coaches will try to find creative ways to utilize his unique combination of size, speed, and athleticism in specialized packages in short-yardage and goal-line situations.
Could Jalen Milroe Be Showcased in a Hybrid Role in His Rookie Season?
Mina Kimes went on NFL Live and made direct comparisons to Hill in regards to Milroe’s unique skillset.
“I really love this as a landing spot for Milroe,” said Kimes. “The athleticism, that unbelievably strong arm … You talk to their coaching staff, their offensive coordinator is Klint Kubiak, who comes from New Orleans, so they had Taysom Hill. In some ways, year one, I think he could be almost like a turbocharged version of Taysom Hill.”

Ben Solak appeared on the Up & Adams Show and echoed the same sentiments. “Klint Kubiak, who is now the offensive coordinator with Seattle, who was previously in New Orleans, and he had Taysom Hill there, and they did a lot of short-yardage running stuff with Taysom Hill,” Solak said.
“They would go empty backfield, Taysom Hill in the gun, just run him quarterback power, right, and go for it on fourth and one. We have that 220-pound guy, and just, we’re gonna put 10 blockers on the line of scrimmage and win on 11-on-11 football. You’re gonna be able to do that with Milroe.”

While that’s not out of the realm of possibility, Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald emphasized to PFT Live that Milroe is, “a quarterback through and through,” distancing the team’s plans from the hybrid role Hill plays in New Orleans. He noted that while Milroe’s athleticism is a significant asset, the team intends to develop him strictly as a quarterback, suggesting that maybe he intends to bring Milroe along more like Steve McNair.
Addressing suggestions about switching positions, Milroe firmly stated, “You don’t ask a zebra to be a dog,” highlighting his commitment to playing quarterback exclusively.
Milroe has been about the areas of his game he needs to improve at quarterback. However, it’s undeniably tantalizing to think about how he could be deployed in his rookie year while he’s still developing as a quarterback.
