Fans are thrilled that the Blue Bloods universe is officially expanding. CBS officially announced the franchise’s newest iteration, an offshoot which will star series favorite Donnie Wahlberg, in February 2025. The working title of the new show is Boston Blue.
The Plot of the New ‘Blue Bloods’ Series Has Been Revealed
In a press release shared by CBS it was revealed that the Blue Bloods offshoot would not be taking place in New York City.
“In BOSTON BLUE, a universe expansion of the long-running top drama BLUE BLOODS, Wahlberg will reprise his role as NYPD officer Danny Reagan as he takes a position with Boston PD. Once in Boston, he is paired with detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family,” the press release said.
Blue Bloods took place in the Big Apple, but Donnie’s character, Danny Reagan, will be taking on a new gig in Boston Blue. Considering the New Kids on the Block alum is from Boston, the new show’s setting seems very fitting.
“You have to remember your roots from Boston because no one in Boston will ever let you forget,” he said in April 2025. “First of all I’m a proud Bostonian, I love the city. I love coming back every chance I get and I will love filming there.”
Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis signed on as executive producers and showrunners of the new show. In addition to starring in Boston Blue, Donnie has also signed on as an executive producer of the project. Jerry Bruckheimer and KristieAnne Reed will also serve as executive producers.
Who Will Star in ‘Boston Blue’?
So far, Donnie is the only Blue Bloods cast member that has been confirmed to be returning to reprise their roles. However, Donnie has dropped multiple hints that some of his former Blue Bloods colleagues will be making cameos on the new show alongside him.
“If anyone knows Danny Reagan, and if anyone knows me, I like surprises and The Reagan’s will always just be a phone call away,” he said during an April 2025 interview on PIX11 News. “Danny Reagan likes to use his phone so I imagine we will pay homage to Blue Bloods as much as we can and honor what Blue Bloods started and carry it forward and I think have a lot of fun surprises for everybody.”
Before the announcement was made, many of the show’s original cast members voiced interest in doing a spinoff or continuation of the franchise, including Abigail Hawk.
Abigail revealed that a spinoff would likely not take place in New York City, which ended up reigning true with the news of Boston Blue.
“There was talk of a spinoff happening,” she told Hello! Magazine in October 2024. “But if it did happen, so immediately after our series ends, it would have to be not involving the Reagan’s or the NYPD at all. It would have to be set in L.A. or we follow a different family.”
At the time, she also shot down speculation that Blue Bloods would find a new home on another network after season 14.
“I don’t think there’s a possibility of it going to another network — I know that there’s been a bit of chatter about that, but I don’t think that that’s a viable option given the talks that we’ve had with the cast and the producers and things like that,” she said at the time.
When Will the New ‘Blue Bloods’ Show Premiere?
While no exact premiere date has been announced just yet, CBS shared that Boston Blue will be making its way to the TV lineup in the 2025-2026 broadcast season. The show was given a straight-to-series order. A teaser trailer shared on Instagram revealed that the show would be coming to the CBS lineup in fall 2025. Currently, S.W.A.T. is in Blue Bloods’ Friday night 10 p.m. spot in the CBS lineup. S.W.A.T. has been canceled after eight seasons, so anything can change in terms of the future lineup when the Shemar Moore-led show airs its series finale in May 2025.
Fans Reacted to the ‘Blue Bloods’ Offshoot News
Some fans took to social media to celebrate the Blue Bloods news, while others were confused why the show was canceled after 14 seasons in the first place.
“What was the point in getting rid of blue bloods then,” one person wrote on X.
“Should have just kept Blue Bloods going…now they have to explain the move to Boston without Baez,” another person said.
