‘Brady Bunch’ house, used in exterior shots for the popular sitcom, gets Los Angeles landmark status

Lua Angeles – Here’s the story…how a modest mid-century home became a Los Angeles landmark.

The Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to designate the “Brady Bunch” house in the San Fernando Valley as a historic and cultural landmark.

The vote gives historic protection to the house on Dilling Street that was used for exterior shots for the TV sitcom that ran from 1969 to 1974.

Interior scenes were filmed on a sound stage, with sets bearing no resemblance to the property that became a photo-op attraction for “The Brady Bunch” fans.

The show, which ran for decades, featured the comedic travails of a family of six siblings from a blended family — “the youngest in curls,” as the theme song put it.

The clapboard-and-stone house with a soaring roof was also featured in the 1995 big-screen movie “The Brady Bunch Movie” and its sequel.

Landmark status protects the house, built in 1959, from demolition or major renovations — but doesn’t prevent them. If the owners decide to make major changes, they will be subject to a design review and the Cultural Heritage Committee can delay the process to find conservation solutions.

The nonprofit L.A. Conservancy pushed for historic status, and CEO Adrian Scott Fine said he was thrilled it was approved. Fans of the show have a personal connection to the property, he said.

“If you’ve seen the Brady Bunch movie, you know this house. People make pilgrimages to see it,” Fine said Wednesday. “Calling it that way makes it even sweeter.”

When the home went on the market in 2018, cable network HGTV won a bidding war that sent the price soaring to $3.5 million, or $1.6 million above the list price for the then-2,400-square-foot (223-square-meter) residence.

The house has been expanded, redesigned and decorated to give it the trademark elements of the specific edition, including a wood-paneled living room with a floating staircase and an orange-and-green kitchen.

The process was documented in a four-part miniseries on HGTV called “A Very Brady Renovation.”
