Son of Indiana city mayor arrested for OWI after falling asleep at McDonald’s drive-thru

The son of an Indiana sheriff was arrested Saturday night after falling asleep behind the wheel of a McDonald’s restaurant while drinking twice the legal alcohol limit.

Christian Roberson, 35, allegedly took a nap behind the wheel of his Kia Optima while it was parked between the take-out windows at a McDonald’s restaurant in Elkhart, Indiana, late Saturday night. ABC 57 I mentioned.

When officers pulled into the parking lot just before 3 a.m. in response to an alleged medical emergency, they found Roberson dazed in his car.

Police noted that he was showing signs of possible weakness when he woke up from his slumber.

They subjected Roberson to full field sobriety tests and a breathalyzer, which showed he was twice over the legal blood alcohol limit of 0.08%. WDNU I mentioned.

The Elkhart Fire Department also responded to the call and confirmed that Roberson was not experiencing any type of medical issue, ABC 57 reported.

Roberson was taken to the hospital for an additional blood draw to confirm his blood alcohol levels. Police said the results were still pending as of Tuesday.

However, a breathalyzer test and erratic behavior at the scene were enough to arrest him on a preliminary charge of operating while intoxicated.

Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson confirmed his son’s arrest. 16 now

Roberson was released on a hefty $25,000 bail, which was inflated considering his many prior OWI convictions, WDNU reported.

His parents, Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson and Regina Roberson, confirmed their son’s arrest for the umpteenth time.

“Regina and I love him and will support him unconditionally during this difficult time. However, drunk driving is dangerous and unacceptable. We believe in accountability, and our son will face this matter through appropriate legal action,” they wrote in a statement to the media.

The Roberson family was previously marred by tragedy when the mayor’s brother, Garvin, disappeared in November 2022. Garvin was found dead in a submerged car in Sturgis, Michigan, a week after he was reported missing. WVPE I mentioned.
