Like most, I do the bulk of my shopping for a new season at the beginning of it. So with the official start of spring on the very near horizon, that means I’m shopping for it as we speak. Once the first warm and sunny day arrives, I will be prepared. The problem is that my closet is full. I don’t even have a hanger to add something new in unless I take something out. So, the need for a clean-out of it is somewhat urgent.
I thought long and hard about what to weed out of my closet to free up some room, and landed on five specific items. They’re all either things I either own too much of, trends that don’t feel particularly fresh anymore, or pieces I simply don’t love enough to wear all that often. The reason I’m sharing my closet clean-out list is that it’s a daunting task (trust me—I routinely put it off for as long as possible), and inspiration and motivation can be very useful in these situations. So without any more procrastination from me, keep scrolling to find out what I’m weeding out of my wardrobe and why, and shop the spring items I plan on adding in.
Weeding Out: Bubble Skirts / Adding: Knee-Length Skirts
While I dabbled in the bubble skirt trend over the past couple of years, I ultimately didn’t find them to mesh with my somewhat classic aesthetic, so out they go (for now, at least). Instead, I’ll be shopping for sleek, ’90s-coded knee-length skirts.

Weeding Out: Longline Vests / Adding: Silky Tops
The problem with longline vests is that I purchased way too many of them, and I want a new top style to incorporate into my wardrobe this spring. They’re flattering and elegant, but I don’t need ten of them. In their place, I’ll be adding in silky tops in the form of lace-trimmed tanks and colorful button-downs.

Weeding Out: Ultra-Short Shorts / Adding: Capri Trousers
I have a hunch that capri pants are going to be just as popular this year as they were last spring and summer. So instead of the ultra-short shorts in my closet that I rarely wear anymore, I’m shopping for polished capris to take their place.

Weeding Out: Chunky Sandals / Adding: Wedge Thong Sandals
Chunky sandals are a style I’ll undoubtedly keep coming back to throughout my life, but for 2026, I’m gravitating toward slimmer, more lightweight sandals that give my spring outfits that ’90s cool-girl look. One trend, in particular, I’m shopping for is wedge thong sandals, which I predict will give kitten-heel thongs a run for their money in 2026.

Weeding Out: Denim Jackets / Adding: Sporty Jackets
As a millennial, it’s understandably difficult for me to part with my beloved denim jacket collection, but I hardly ever wear them anymore, and therefore, the collection needs to be edited. But a trend that I’m keen on wearing for spring 2026 is sporty funnel-neck jackets. In the past several months alone, I’ve purchased three, and hangers need to be freed up for them.
