Emma Raducanu Appears To Have Made a Choice, Weeks After Mark Petchey’s ‘I’ll Take a Bullet for Her’ Vow

Emma Raducanu is one of the biggest names in women’s tennis right now. Although it has been more than four years since she last won a Grand Slam, she is still one of the most talked-about names in the sport, regularly making headlines.

She recently had been struggling on court, but now she appears to have found the key to improving on the WTA Tour.

Emma Raducanu Spotted On-Court With Former Coach Mark Petchey

Raducanu had been training with Rafael Nadal’s former long-time coach, Francisco Roig, since the Cincinnati Open last year. After concluding her 2025 season early due to serious illness issues and a foot injury, she focused on recovery, skipping exhibition tournaments to travel to Barcelona with the Spaniard for intensive training.

The British No. 1 added Emma Stewart, the longtime WTA physiotherapist, to her roster to help her recover quickly and focus on her game.

However, following her second-round exit at the 2026 Australian Open, Roig and Raducanu announced a mutual split, ending their nearly six-month-long coaching partnership. Talking about this split, she said she is “not actively looking for a coach,” stating that they weren’t aligning on key aspects as the main reason behind the decision.

However, it seems Raducanu has already made up her mind and found a replacement for the Spaniard. According to reports, she is set to reunite with her former coach, Mark Petchey, for the upcoming WTA 1000 event in Indian Wells, with whom she worked for about five months. With the tennis analyst, she reached the quarterfinals in Miami and the third round at Wimbledon, and split before the North American hard-court swing.

Interestingly, in late January this year, Petchey commented on his relationship with Raducanu following their split. He made it very clear that there are no hard feelings between them and that they are “still in good communication.” Petchey even added that he would help her forever and would even “take a bullet for her,” underscoring just how strong their connection was, despite working together for only about 5 months.

Raducanu’s Turbulent Coaching History and Recent Results

Since her WTA main draw debut in 2021, Raducanu has worked with over nine coaches, with her tenure with Nick Cavaday being the longest, from January 2024 to January 2025. However, she is yet to find a permanent coach with whom she can focus on improving her game and replicating the 2021 US Open performance.

Raducanu has also struggled with her on-court form, with the six-time Grand Slam champion Boris Becker expressing concern over one particular statistic. In her entire career, she has reached a WTA tournament semifinal only five times: the 2021 US Open, the 2022 Korea Open, the 2024 Nottingham Open, the 2025 Mubadala Citi DC Open, and the 2026 Transylvania Open. This drew a shocking reaction from the German champion, who wrote, “That’s it?” to show his concerns.

This year, she reached the quarterfinals of the Hobart International, where she lost to Taylah Preston. Then she travelled to Melbourne, where she lost to Anastasia Potapova in the second round, before heading to Romania, where she delivered an impressive performance before losing to Sorana Cîrstea in the finals.

In Qatar, she retired from her opening-round match against Colombian Camilla Osorio after trailing 6-2, 6-4, 0-2  due to blood pressure issues. Raducanu then lost her first match in Dubai to lucky loser Antonia Ružić, after Italian Elisabetta Cocciaretto withdrew from the tournament due to a right thigh injury.

It would be interesting to see whether Raducanu decides to work with Petchey again and gets back to her champion form.
