Orlando Magic wing Desmond Bane became the center of attention in the NBA for a brief moment during their game against the New York Knicks on Sunday. His actions immediately turned heads, including that of retired player Eddie Johnson.
Ex-NBA Wing Reacts to Desmond Bane’s Actions Against the Knicks
Typically, players generate the type of attention Bane attracted by creating an incredible highlight. This was not the case for the Magic player, though, as he committed an action that can be considered hostile against Knicks forward OG Anunoby.
The play in question happened with just over six minutes left in the fourth quarter, with the Magic trailing 80-91. The Knicks intercepted a pass from guard Jalen Suggs and pushed to a fast break, with Anunoby leading the pack.
However, Anthony Black managed to recover quickly, racing down the court to strip Anunoby of the ball as he elevated for a shot attempt. This caused the Knicks player to lose the ball and fall into the stanchion. The ball was recovered by a trailing Bane, who then flung it at the downed Anunoby.

Johnson, who last played in the NBA in 1999, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his thoughts on Bane’s actions.
“That’s a legal play but nasty. 😂,” Johnson said.

Players occasionally try to toss the ball at opponents to force it out of bounds, generating an extra possession for their team and a brief moment to catch their breath. However, a review of the play showed that Bane was not near the boundary line. In fact, he appeared to wind the ball up before throwing it at Anunoby, with both feet securely in bounds.
After review, officials deemed Bane’s actions a hostile act, resulting in a technical free throw for the Knicks. However, because the ball was tossed at Anunoby while he was out of bounds, the Magic retained possession after the free throw.
When the dust settled, Anunoby and Bane were seen talking like friends, with Bane appearing to explain his actions. Anunoby even cracked a smile while they spoke.
The Knicks managed to get the last laugh, surviving a late-game onslaught by the Magic to win 106-100.
Bane finished with 16 points, six rebounds, and four assists. Anunoby had 21 points, seven rebounds, and three steals to help the Knicks prevail.
