NFL Issues Questionable Punishment to Jauan Jennings

During the 49ers’ 20-9 over the Panthers on Monday Night Football in Week 12, there was an incident in which Moehrig hit Jennings in the groin. While Jennings didn’t take immediate action, he did exact his revenge after the game.

After the game, while players were shaking hands and talking, Jennings hit Moehrig with an open hand across the facemask.

Immediately after the strike, Panthers linebacker Krys Barnes separated Jennings from Moehrig.

In the aftermath of that, as mentioned, Moehrig has been suspended for one game. The timing of his suspension isn’t ideal, as the Panthers are set to be without cornerback Jaycee Horn due to a concussion, leaving them even fewer players in the secondary against one of the best offenses in the league, the Los Angeles Rams. The Panthers have a 70 grade in PFSN’s Defense Impact metric, which is 24th in the NFL.

As for Jennings, according to Matt Maiocco of “NBC Sports Bay Area,” Jennings has been fined $12,172.

“The NFL fined 49ers WR Jauan Jennings $12,172 for unnecessary roughness after he retaliated against Panthers safety Tre’von Moehrig at the conclusion of Monday night’s game at Levi’s Stadium. Moehrig serves a one-game suspension for his below-the-belt punch to Jennings,” Maiocco wrote.

Jennings wasn’t suspended, but fans are using social media to express their displeasure with Jennings even receiving a fine.

“That’s more than I thought he would get… I figured it would be around $8,000.00 to $9,000.00… That’s how the NFL works. They need to pass a new rule stating that a player retaliating after being attacked should not be fined as long as it is not excessive. Jennings was not…” one fan said.

Another fan posted a GIF of someone saying, “and that’s some bull****.”

There appears to be a common theme in that fans don’t believe Jennings should’ve been fined for retaliating after being hit in the groin and, as Jennings called it, “childish behavior.”

Regardless, Jennings will be out there in Week 13 for the 49ers as they take on the Cleveland Browns in Shedeur Sanders’ second NFL start.
