(KRON) – California Gov. Gavin Newsom responded with a simple letter to a Republican lawsuit challenging Proposition 50.
“Good luck losers,” Newsom’s office tweeted on Wednesday.
The lawsuit was filed by Dhillon Law Group, Assemblyman David Tangipa, 18 California electors, and the California Republican Party, according to a post on the party’s Facebook page. In a video posted on social media, Mike Colombo, a San Francisco attorney with Dillon Law Group, said the map enacted under the passage of Prop 50 was “unconstitutional.”
“The map is designed to favor one race of California voters over others,” Colombo said. “This violates the Fourteenth Amendment’s guarantee of equal protection under the law, and the right under the Fifteenth Amendment, not to have one’s voice diminished by race.” “When drawing the map for Proposition 50, the senior consultant who drew the map stated that the first thing he did was increase the power of Latino voters.”
“In addition, the state legislature declared that the maps increase the power of Latino voters,” he continued.
In a statement posted on X, Newsom’s office rejected the effort.

“We have not reviewed the lawsuit, but if it is from the California Republican Party and the law firm of Harmeet Dhillon, it will fail,” Newsom’s office said.
Harmeet Dhillon, founder of the law firm, is the former Chairman of the California Republican Party and currently serves as Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Civil Rights Division under President Donald Trump.
On Tuesday, California voters overwhelmingly approved Proposition 50, a statewide redistricting measure that lays the groundwork for Democrats to pick up five additional House seats. The measure was instituted in response to similar redistricting efforts by the Republican Party in Texas.
With about 75% of the votes counted, 63% of voters supported passing the measure.
