Denver had its first freeze of fall on Sunday

DENVER (KDVR) — The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting colder with the arrival of fall in Colorado, and the weather in Denver overnight was the coldest so far this season.

Temperatures at Denver International Airport early Sunday morning reached a low of 32 degrees, hitting the freezing point and giving the city its first freeze of the fall.

Denver usually sees its first fall of the season on October 7th each year, but this year it fell about two weeks later.

“The first fall freeze usually starts around Oct. 7, Oct. 8, and that’s not the case this year,” said Greg Perez, a meteorologist with Pinpoint Weather. “We had to wait another 12 days for the first freeze.”

Temperatures in Denver will see a big swing on Sunday, according to Pinpoint Weather’s forecast, going from a low of 32 degrees to afternoon highs in the mid-70s. After that, Denver will see a slow period back into the 60s, with lows in the upper 30s and lower 40s.

While this marks the first freeze of the season in Denver, and temperatures this week will warm up a bit, the Pinpoint Weather team said the first hard freeze, when temperatures drop to 28 degrees or below for at least an hour, may not be too far away.

“I hope everyone can blow up their sprinklers, get all the water out of their hoses. If not, you’ll have another opportunity to do that, but you’ll definitely want to move forward with this,” Perez said.
