Santa Clarita, California – The sister-in-law of former U.S. Sen. and Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney was found dead Friday evening next to a parking garage in the Town Center area of Santa Clarita, a suburb just north of Los Angeles, according to officials.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department told ABC News it is conducting an investigation into the death of 64-year-old Carrie Romney of Valencia.
Her cause of death was listed as “deferred” while toxicology tests were pending, the Los Angeles County coroner said.
Preliminary information indicates that she may have jumped or fallen from the garage, according to sources.
The investigation is still ongoing and investigators are awaiting the official cause of death to be determined by the coroner.
Mitt Romney ran for president twice, once in 2008 when he sought the Republican nomination but withdrew after the primaries, endorsing candidate John McCain. He ran again four years later in 2012, this time securing the Republican nomination, but losing in the general election to former President Barack Obama.
This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.
