Opening for first T&T Supermarket in Bay Area delayed

(Crohn’s) – Fans looking forward to the Bay Area’s first T&T supermarket will have to wait a little longer. The Canadian-based Asian grocer’s opening has been delayed, T&T Supermarket CEO Tina Lee said in a video post on social media.

T&T was scheduled to have a grand opening this fall at the Westgate Mall in San Jose, KRON4 reported in January, but it has now been postponed. Lee has officially ruled out a grand opening this year, and is now scheduled to open in the spring of 2026.

Lee said power issues in the store’s building delayed its opening. The crew relies on a temporary power source, but the CEO said her team needs a more stable, permanent power source to progress with the construction process.

“I have some disappointing news for our friends in San Jose, but the store is delayed. No, I’m not happy about that,” Lee said in the video. “We rely a lot on utility companies to help us move forward. However, it’s understandable that California has a lot to do on energy and electricity. I remember the crazy fires that happened last year, and there’s a lot of backlogs because of that.”

“As our first store in California, we want this to be perfect, so please be patient with us,” the caption of the post read.

The San Jose supermarket, located at 1600 Saratoga Street, is expected to create about 200 jobs. It occupies the space previously occupied by a Walmart store that opened in 2012. T&T announced earlier this year that it would open its second location in the San Francisco Bay Area.

T&T Supermarket is referred to as “Canada’s favorite Asian grocery retailer,” according to a company press release. The supermarket says it is the largest Asian grocery store chain in Canada. Founded in 1993 in Vancouver, it now operates more than 33 stores across British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec.

“Right now, it looks like San Jose will need to wait until… all I can say is spring. I think summer is already very far away,” Lee said. “The first half of 2026 is when you’ll see San Jose. So we’re really sorry guys.”
