James Franklin Provides Drew Allar Status Update After Leaving Northwestern Loss

Following a Northwestern touchdown that put the Wildcats up by one point, Allar completed back-to-back passes to set up a 3rd and 4. However, on the third down, he scrambled up the middle into a second-level defender. As he was being tackled, a defensive lineman came low on his left side, seemingly twisting Allar’s ankle.

After the play, Allar immediately reached for his left ankle. The training staff came onto the field, and after some attention, Allar gingerly walked off the field on his own power.

Unfortunately, the team’s concern was serious enough for the star QB to be carted from the sideline to the locker room after backup signal-caller Ethan Grunkemeyer was unable to convert the fourth down.

After the game, Franklin provided an update to the media, saying, “Drew will be done for the year.” It’s likely Allar suffered a fracture or dislocation, due to the nature of the injury, although that remains speculation until/if the school provides more information next week.

The Nittany Lions are now 3-3 overall and 0-3 in the conference after losses to the Oregon Ducks, UCLA Bruins, and Northwestern Wildcats, and with Allar now slated to miss the rest of the season, their CFP hopes have all but ended.

Penn State will turn to Grunkemeyer, a redshirt freshman who was an Elite 11 finalist but has just 13 collegiate attempts to his name, for the final six games in 2025.
