Leaf peeping this weekend? Weather may make it difficult

DENVER (KDVR) — Fall foliage season isn’t over yet in Colorado, but it is in the higher elevations.

Autumn colors reach their peak in some foothill areas. Foliage peaked in higher areas last week and has begun to fall, leaving branches empty.

Higher rural areas are more likely to have bare branches than chances of foliage peeping with rain this weekend, Pinpoint Weather meteorologist Travis Michels said.

Continuous rain is in the forecast

The chances of scattered rain will increase on Friday morning, with the chances of rain increasing in the afternoon and evening over most parts of the highlands. Rain is expected to continue Saturday in higher elevation areas, with showers arriving in the Denver metro area.

Sunday morning could bring more scattered rain to the mountains. Not only will rain cause a lot of foliage to fall, but overcast and humid skies can make for an annoying leaf peeping experience.

The best time to spend the weekend is Sunday afternoon, when the rain is expected to start to ease.

Where and When to See Fall Colors in Colorado

Although many areas are past their peak, there are still more opportunities to see fall colors in Colorado this season.

Fall foliage forecast as of August 25, 2025 (KDVR)

Some cameras in areas like Golden show a lot of green on the trees as of Thursday, but Michels said it will likely peak soon. Next week may be a good chance to see foliage at lower elevations along the Front Range.

Colors are starting to creep up near Denver as well. Next week could be a good opportunity to see fall foliage around the metro area, Michels said. Areas like Golden, Morrison, and Boulder could be vibrant with color next week.

As for Denver, some foliage is showing color, but colors are expected to peak in the latter half of October.
