Will Fantasy Managers Be Without the Panthers RB Week 5?

The Carolina Panthers are monitoring their backfield situation as they prepare for this weekend’s action. Chuba Hubbard is still dealing with the calf issue that he sustained at practice last week. Chuba Hubbard Injury Update

Hubbard first sustained his calf injury during Thursday’s practice last week as the Panthers prepared for their matchup against New England. The issue was significant enough to limit his participation on Friday, earning him a questionable designation on the final injury report.

Despite the calf concern, head coach Dave Canales described the problem as “some soreness” and expressed confidence that Hubbard would be available. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Hubbard “should be good to go” for Sunday’s contest against the Patriots.

Hubbard ultimately played in Week 4, handling his usual workload without any apparent limitations. He carried the ball 10 times for 49 yards and caught all three of his targets for 20 yards in Carolina’s 42-13 loss to New England.

There were no indications that Hubbard aggravated the calf issue during the game or came out of Sunday’s contest any worse for wear. He appeared to move normally throughout the contest and maintained his typical snap share despite the lopsided score.

However, Wednesday’s press conference revealed that wasn’t the case. Head Dave Canales said Hubbard did, in fact, feel worse after the game than he felt the previous week.

Hubbard did not participate in Wednesday’s practice session to begin this week’s preparation. While this absence is certainly noteworthy given his recent calf troubles, it is most likely routine maintenance rather than a sign of renewed concern.

Wednesday practices are often used for veteran rest, especially for players managing minor injuries from the previous week. Hubbard’s absence fits the pattern of a team being cautious with a key player who dealt with soreness last week.

The real indicator of Hubbard’s status will come with Thursday’s practice report. If he misses Thursday’s session, there would be legitimate cause for concern about his availability for Week 5. However, at this point, fantasy managers should not worry about his status.

The Panthers have shown they are willing to be cautious with Hubbard’s workload management, but there is no indication that the calf issue has become a more serious problem. His ability to play through the questionable tag last week and perform at his usual level suggests the injury is minor.

Fantasy managers should monitor Thursday’s practice participation closely, but there is currently no reason to panic about Hubbard’s Week 5 availability against Miami.

Hubbard Fantasy Outlook

We all seem to agree that Chuba Hubbard is an above-average talent, and there is no debating his role as the bellcow in Carolina, but if he’s not finding the end zone, he’s in trouble.

In Weeks 1-2, he scored and was a top-10 producer at the position. In Weeks 3-4, he didn’t and wasn’t a top-25 running back in PPR formats.

All running backs at some level need touchdowns to sustain value, so I’m not turned off by that idea, but given the ineptitude of the Panthers, it’s a problem.

Splash plays have also been hard to come by for Hubbard in 2022: 10.4% of his carries gained 10+ yards last season, 3.8% this season. There simply isn’t much room to operate in this Bryce Young system, but he’s been able to salvage some value with 3+ targets in all four weeks.

There is no real blueprint for Hubbard to post a top-5 week, but in this matchup where the game script should stay reasonably neutral, I suspect we see him flirt with RB1 status for the week, and that makes him a viable play in every form of fantasy.
