55% of ACC students face housing insecurity, study finds

Austin – Austin Community College (ACC) focuses on delivering her students to reasonable prices.

The college announced a partnership with the housing conductor on Wednesday, a non -profit organization devoted to removing barriers in front of the housing.

The housing conductor connects students who have local real estate owners who want to provide accessible housing options at reasonable prices.

“Rental prices are a great obstacle for our students because their income is limited,” said Christie Cortis, the basic awareness director of basic needs, with Austin Community College.

According to a modern survey from the college, which recorded more than 44,000 registered students, 55 % of ACC students indicated that they are unsafe.

Also, 57 % of students will have difficulty getting $ 500 in cash or an emergency, according to the ACC survey.

“It is certain that it is difficult to achieve these academic goals when there is a bucket of basic needs that are not met.”

Cortis said that the lack of a place to contact the house can have an effect on the student’s degrees or mental health, and this is one of the reasons that make them partnership with the housing conductor.

The average price of one -bedroom apartment in Austin is about 1400 dollars per month Apartments.

How does the program work?

“We provide this access through partnership with real estate to give them risk mitigating and insurance mainly, in exchange for reducing barriers that often prevent people from reaching housing,” said China Dinz, the administrative director of the housing conductor in Austin.

Dinz said there are a number of factors that could prevent students from finding safe housing at reasonable prices.

“If they have a low credit, if they are not rented before, they may have some previous rental debts of something that has not succeeded, so all these things will prevent them from reaching even when the cheapest property is available,” Dinz said.

According to ACC, this work has become possible through a housing conductor partnership with the homeless strategy office in Austin, which provides funding to expand access to housing for individuals and families with the risk of displacement.
