Mexico wants to increase taxes on sodas, other 'unhealthy' foods

San Diego (Border Report– The Secretariat of Finance and General Credit in Mexico proposes an additional tax on foodstuffs, which are unhealthy to reduce the consumption of unwanted foods, treated foods and fast food, as well as the use of tobacco products.

The Mexican government believes that the procedure will also raise about 140 billion peso or about 757 million dollars of revenue every year.

This “healthy tax” will be placed on elements such as soft drinks, juices and energy drinks.

“The money collected directly to health programs will be applied,” Mexican President Claudia Shinbom said during its daily press conference on Tuesday. “We know that these drinks raise health issues. That’s all about health.”

Another duty will be applied to tobacco products, which taxes are already imposed significantly.

The new tobacco tax will gradually increase by 200 percent during 2030.

Mexico also studies 8 percent tax on digital services and video games that contain pictures or violent sequence.

Online games and bets may witness a tax increase in the coming years, according to the Mexican government.

Chinbum says that taxes aim to encourage healthy lifestyles.

According to the Minister of Health, 76 percent of the adult population in Mexico suffers from weight gain and suffers from diseases such as diabetes, cancer and heart.
