Sloane Stephens Confidently Asserts She Has ‘Plenty in the Tank’ Despite Quick Exit Upon Guadalajara Comeback

Even when results don’t go a player’s way, maintaining a positive mindset is a mark of strength. American tennis star and 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens’ return to the tour in Guadalajara may have been short-lived, but she walked away with plenty of positives.

Having been out since March, Stephens turned her focus to broadcasting for multiple media outlets, reporting on the French Open and, most recently, the US Open. While many thought the former Grand Slam champion had shifted to a different domain, Stephens made it clear she wasn’t stepping away from tennis anytime soon.

What Did Sloane Stephens Have To Say About Her Brief Comeback at Guadalajara?

Stephens had earlier revealed that she was training intensely for her next tournament and recently returned to action as a Wild Card against Lucrezia Stefanini at the WTA 500 event in Guadalajara. Despite hoping for a deep run, the American’s campaign ended in the first round, though she fought valiantly.

Stefanini took control early, claiming the first set 6-4 and putting Stephens under immediate pressure. The American fought back fiercely, leveling the match by taking the second set 6-4. But just as it seemed the 32-year-old was regaining her rhythm, Stefanini regained dominance, cruising through the final set 6-1 to secure her place in the next round.

Despite the loss, Stephens found plenty of positives to take away. Sharing a match-day photo on Instagram, she expressed relief at being healthy, injury-free, and still physically strong.

“Not the dream start, but I’ll take it: pain-free, foot intact, and still plenty in the tank. Onward. Thank you Guadalajara Open for the WC,” she wrote in her Instagram story.

Stephens’ remarks underscore her steadfast commitment to making a mark on the sport she once ruled, while also highlighting her positive mindset despite an early exit.

How Commentating Gave Sloane Stephens a Fresh Perspective on the Sport?

While competing remains at the heart of her career, Stephens’ commentary work has provided a unique vantage point that taught her nuances she rarely notices on court.

“Honestly, commentary has given me a whole new lens on tennis. As a player, you’re so locked into your own preparation, routines, and emotions that you don’t always step back and see the broader story unfolding. sitting in the booth, I’ve had to analyze matches in real time, explain strategy, and highlight things for fans that I might take for granted as a competitor,” she explained.

Stephens’ on-court rise began with a semifinal appearance at the 2013 Australian Open. She then soared to prominence with her 2017 US Open triumph and a runner-up finish at the 2018 French Open, ultimately reaching a career-high ranking of World No. 3.

However, her recent performances have fallen short of her true potential. She hasn’t won a singles match since Wimbledon 2024 and has spent much of the year managing a foot injury.
