New tent site for San Jose's homeless faces criticism from advocates and residents

(Crohn) – A homeless shelter will open to connect people to permanent housing on Taylor Street in San Jose on Tuesday.

The shelter, the first of its kind for the Gulf region, will provide each person a tent and access to services. However, the site faces criticism from both defenders and local residents.

“It will be hotter than hell, literally, and the mayor believes it is a great idea of tents,” said Sean Cartrait, a lawyer who cares about the site’s conditions.

“I hope this actually helps, but at the same time I hope it will be close to homes and families,” said Austin Vehler, a local resident.

The new safe sleep site is designed similar to a similar initiative in San Diego, which faced legal challenges. Lifting the population there is a federal lawsuit claiming that the tents have reached internal temperatures of more than 100 degrees.

The mayor of San Jose Matt Mahan supports the initiative as part of a broader plan to open more than a thousand shelter area this year, including hotel and tents rooms. He stated: “This is the first safe sleep site in San Jose, and as a way it will be carefully evaluated … … These sites succeed only if they provide a better and safer alternative to the unintended camps.”

Despite the controversy, some neighbors are optimistic with caution, in the hope that the site will help reduce the displacement in the region without increasing local issues.

While San Jose is preparing to open the first safe sleeping site, the initiative meets both hope and doubt, which reflects the complex challenges of addressing homelessness in urban areas. Watch the full report from the Jack Molmud from Kron4 in the video at the top of this article.
