20 years later, woman who fled Hurricane Katrina thankful to call Colorado home

Parker, Colorado (KDVR) – Twenty -year -old celebrated on Friday since Hurricane Katrina has fallen in Louisiana, causing damage to more than $ 120 billion and taking the lives of more than 1,000 people.

Some of those who fled New Orleans are still praying Colorado home after two decades.

Marla Jones Newman, her husband and daughter, one year -old, were evacuated from their home in New Orleans, believing that they would disappear only a few days. Jones Numan grew up in the city.

In 2005, she and her husband lived in Timuri, a neighborhood not far from the famous French neighborhood. By the time in late August, they were already evacuated for other storms twice in that summer.

“It is just a wonderful, warm and attractive place,” said Jones Newman. “When you grow up in New Orleans, you are amateur meteorological doctor.”

The third time was before Katrina. They originally left to Alabama before having to move to the north to Atlanta. Seeing the pictures outside the city you love and hurt, and originally that she planned to return.

“We have thought that we will go for three days,” said Jones Newman.

Their house has not been destroyed, but they are still unable to return to the city. They decided that it was time to move and Jones Newman had one big condition.

“I have finished. No more water,” she said.

Her husband’s job has made some cities possible, but Littleton immediately stuck.

Jones Newman said: “I looked at a map and I like, my God, they are not coastal.” “This is where we want to go.”

Twenty years later, the family lives in Parker. Jones Newman says that society welcomed them with open arms.

“You create this family, and we have people in our lives here. It is just amazing,” she said.

They are still returning to New Orleans several times a year to visit the family, and she is interested in another accident such as Katrina is still possible.

Jones Newman said: “With Fema fluctuations and the last climate that happens is what is being, I am really concerned.

While Jones Newman loved her upbringing as she did, she was grateful to her daughter in Colorado.

Jones Newman said: “I am not crazy how I got here, I love the fact that I am here.”

She says she hopes that Colorado residents will continue to welcome people, and may suffer from similar difficulties as her family, saying that she is grateful to the minds and hearts of her community.
