Building a deep roster sits on every coach’s wish list, but Georgia Tech’s depth concerns run deeper than most programs after massive turnover along the offensive line. The Yellow Jackets lost three starters from the 2024 season: left tackle Corey Robinson, center Weston Franklin, and right guard Jordan Williams. Replacing this group while avoiding the injury problems that plagued them in 2024 became a top priority during the offseason.
During his press conference, Key stressed how crucial depth becomes, particularly on special teams. “As last season went on last year and we started losing some bodies out on the field, the thing you don’t see as much is the impact it has on (special) teams. So, to increase that, I think it’s really going to help us in those areas.”
Key emphasized how added depth keeps teams fresh during crucial fourth-quarter moments while enabling more intense practice sessions. Despite significant roster turnover, he believes his program successfully addressed its depth needs this offseason. The Yellow Jackets secured five four-star and 18 three-star recruits while adding two four-star transfers and 21 three-star portal additions. This influx of talent is designed to elevate the program throughout the 2025 campaign.

The next few months will show whether Key and his staff did enough to address their depth issues, but the preseason outlook appears favorable. According to ESPN, Georgia Tech has the fifth-best odds to win the ACC Title at +1200. Following two consecutive seven-win seasons, Vegas Insider has their win total at 7.5, which seems reasonable given the middle-of-the-road strength of schedule they’ll face.
Georgia Tech hasn’t won more than seven games in a season since 2016, but Key’s program is aiming at surpassing that mark this season. They’ll start their campaign Friday at 8 PM as four-point favorites at Colorado, looking to prove their depth improvements can translate into the program’s best season in nearly a decade.
