Mariners Boss Makes Feelings Clear on Eugenio Suárez Trade Sweepstakes As Race Heats Up for D-Backs Star

As the MLB Trade Deadline is just a few hours away, the Seattle Mariners are in hot pursuit of Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eugenio Suárez. It shouldn’t surprise MLB insiders to see Seattle going for him since Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto has some history working for the Diamondbacks.

Suárez, hitting .247 with 36 homers and 87 RBIs, suffered quite a scare in a Monday night 5-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park. A pitch from Tigers pitcher Will Vest hit him on his right index finger. X-rays didn’t show significant damage to his finger, which is good news for clubs like Seattle, which want to add his bat to their lineup.

Why Does Mariners Boss Want Eugenio Suárez?

The Mariners are trying their best to get back into the American League West Division race. Entering Tuesday’s games, Seattle is 57-50, three games behind the slumping Houston Astros. Getting Suárez would be a fantastic pick-up for the Mariners, who are getting offensive support from catcher Cal Raleigh.

Raleigh has 41 homers this season and aims to hit the 60-homer mark. If Dipoto could add Suárez to the lineup, it would give the Mariners even more of an offensive lift.

On Monday, July 28, former longtime MLB general manager Jim Bowden said in an appearance on “Foul Territory” that he’s talked with Dipoto. “I talked to Jerry Dipoto, the president of the Seattle Mariners, yesterday,” Bowden said. “I asked him if he was done making this great trade for Josh Naylor. He said, ‘No. I’m going all in. I’m there. I’m going.’

“His owner’s willing to spend money at this deadline,” Bowden said. “He has a farm system that’s literally loaded. There’s no reason why he shouldn’t finish the job. As a former major-league reliever himself, that’s his priority. That being said, I asked him if he’s still in on Suárez, expecting a ‘no.’

“He said, ‘If I can add impact at third base, I’ll do that, too,’” Bowden said. “So I think Seattle’s going to be very, very fascinating over the next couple of days here.”

Suárez Appears To Be ‘OK’ After Getting Hit by Pitch

After Monday night’s game, Suárez was relieved to find out that there was no structural damage to his index finger. “The good news is that the X-rays were negative, but it still obviously hurt,” Suárez said, according to The Associated Press. “There are more tests scheduled for (Tuesday), and we will go from there. I’ll come back as quickly as I can.”

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo took note of the incident, saying that he didn’t think Vest intended to target Suárez. “He’s very tough and he never even winces,” Lovullo said. “When he reacts like that, you know it isn’t good.”

The Mariners acquired Naylor from the Diamondbacks on July 24, 2025. Naylor, who was in his first season with Arizona after being acquired in a trade with Cleveland during the MLB offseason, is hitting .292 with 11 homers and 59 RBIs this season. Naylor has an OBP of .359 and a .442 slugging percentage, according to StatMuse.

Seattle continues its three-game series against the Athletics on Tuesday night. It hopes that Dipoto can pull the right strings and add Suárez to the team as soon as possible.
