(BCN)-On Friday, Auckland fragmented street safety improvements near Lake Merrit, two years after a 4-year-old child was killed in the area.
The $ 5.4 million project, known as Maia Correia Memorial Bikey, will add a completely separate bike lane that will be protected from vehicles through high concrete barriers from East 18th Street to EL Embarcadero.
This project focuses on the area where Maia Correia was killed in a collision while riding a bicycle with her father in August 2023. It will also improve the safety of pedestrians who walk through Lakeshore to reach the Merritt Lake and improve access to people who cross.
“We are still sad about Maya’s death and honoring her life and the lives of all children by installing a safe infrastructure for Oakland of all ages,” said Oakland Barbara’s Mayor of Lee on Friday. “This is the work of saving life, and while we hope it will be here soon to prevent Mia’s death, we are committed to making the Auckland streets safe for all users.”
“Mia lived for 4 years, two months and one week in this world, but she still lives in our hearts forever,” said Hyde Gavari, Jeddah, Maya Korea. Her family was credited with the changes.
