Giants Get Bad News As Young WR Suffers Season-Ending Achilles Injury During Training Camp

The New York Giants had their worst season since 1974, finishing just 3-14 in 2024-25. It continues a rough stretch for them as they have just one postseason win since winning Super Bowl XLVI. In fact, they have just three seasons finishing over .500 in that span as their 79-132-1 record over that stretch is the fourth-worst in the league, trailing only the Jacksonville Jaguars, Cleveland Browns, and New York Jets.

New York is hoping for a turnaround after signing Russell Wilson to a one-year, $10.5 million, guaranteed contract. It will mark his fourth team in the past five seasons. The 10-time Pro Bowler spent the 2024-25 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, throwing for 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions in 11 games played. He completed 63.7% of his passes and added 155 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 43 carries.

If things don’t work out, the Giants also added Jameis Winston in free agency, while trading back into the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft to select Jaxson Dart. While the morale around the team was much stronger to begin training camp, that optimism took a devastating hit on Sunday as young wide receiver Bryce Ford-Wheaton suffered a season-ending injury.

How Will Bryce Ford-Wheaton’s Injury Impact the Giants’ Special Teams?

Ford-Wheaton joined the New York Giants as an undrafted free agent in 2023. He missed his entire rookie season after tearing his ACL and will once again be sidelined with a season-ending injury. Dan Duggan of The Athletic broke the news, tweeting:

“Giants WR Bryce Ford-Wheaton suffered a torn Achilles in today’s practice, per source. That was the fear based on how the scene unfolded. Brutal blow for the third-year special teams ace who missed his entire rookie season after suffering a torn ACL in the preseason.”

Ford-Wheaton also addressed the injury, stating:

“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t devastated! I did everything by the book! Didn’t take a single shortcut, left no stone unturned, invested everything into my body and my health this year. I’m not sure why me but I promise I’m not going out on these terms.

“It’s a long road ahead for sure but I know this is just part of Gods plan for me no matter how tough it may seem right now. Thank you all for your prayers, please continue to keep me in them. I WILL be back that’s a promise!! God gives his toughest battles to his strongest soldiers! 💙🤞🏾”

The torn Achilles marks his second season-ending injury in his brief three-year career. Ford-Wheaton was active for 14 games in 2024-25 but mostly appeared on special teams. Despite the limited offensive role, he was expected to compete for a bigger opportunity this season, making the timing of this setback particularly crushing for both player and team.
