Safeway workers' strike averted, unions say it's a ‘victory’

((Crohn– A preliminary agreement was reached between Safeway workers and the company, according to UFCW Local 5 and UFCW Local 648 unions.

The agreement occurred just an hour before the strike, according to the unions.

“This is a hard and inspiring victory,” said John Ferham Local Fahm at UFCW and President of the Local UFCW University 648 in a joint statement. “Since our members stood together – stalled and not shaken – they secured a contract that reflects their value and provides real improvements to their families and their future.”

In a statement by Kron4 last week, Safeway expressed his hope in a decision, saying: “We are working hard to balance the needs of our colleagues and our customers, and to maintain our site as a reliable choice in the market by providing consistent value, and ensuring a long -term sustainability for our business in making a very competing spot.”

Per UFCW Local 5 and UFCW Local 648, including consensus:

  • The meaningful wages increase to reflect the basic contributions of workers
  • Retirement pension plan improves pension workers’ savings
  • Fine scheduling improvements to enhance the quality of life
  • Increased health care contributions to maintain benefits at reasonable and accessible prices
  • The language of improved job protection to create a safer and more respectable workplace

Syndicate leaders say they define the sounds of ratification in the coming days.

The total unions participating in the strike reached more than 25,000 Safeway workers in northern California and 16,000 in the Gulf region.
