Mahmoud Khalil case: Columbia University protester must be released from ICE detention, federal judge orders

New York — A federal judge ordered the release of the pro -Columbia University activist Mahmoud Khalil.

American boycott judge Michael Varbarars indicated that he would issue something that requires the release of Khalil on Friday.

He denied the government’s proposal to remain the ruling for seven days.

During the session, Varbarars said that the government did not make any attempt to prove that Khalil’s release would harm them in an irrevocable way, and that Khalil represents the danger of the trip.

“What all this evidence adds is the lack of violence, the lack of property destruction, and the lack of anything that might be characterized by incitement to violence,” said the judge, on the authority of Khalil, who helped the leader of the camp protests in Colombia last spring.

Khalil’s lawyer, Alina Das, reaffirmed Khalil’s belief that he was punished for the words that should be protected through the first amendment.

She said: “The latest government’s actions confirm what we have claimed in this petition all the time, that revenge detention is the goal of the government, and that the purpose of every step the government has taken in this case is to ensure that Mr. Khalil is still being held until he is deported as revenge and punishment for his speech and his point of view.”

The judge asked the parties to consult with the judge of the reconciliation on any conditions that will be attached to the release of Khalil on bail.

The ruling came at the same time as the immigration judge in Gina, Louisiana, denied the request of Khalil from asylum and ordered him to remain the detained – but the order of the judge Farbares replaces that.

Last week, Judge Farbiarz issued a preliminary order prohibiting the Trump administration from continuing to detention Khalil based on the decision of Foreign Minister Marco Rubio that his continued presence in the country would pose a threat to foreign policy – but the judge later stood with the government to judge that Khalil could continue to arrest the reasons that he applied to green information.

Khalil, the owner of a green card married to an American citizen, has been held in a detention facility since he was arrested by ice agents in New York City in March.
