“Once You Step on the Court, There Are No Friends” – Carlos Alcaraz on Facing Davidovich Fokina on the ATP Tour
After concluding their clay court season at the 2025 French Open, Alcaraz and Fokina will start their grass court season at the 2025 Queen’s Club Championships.
Alcaraz will enter the ATP 500 tournament after defending his title at Roland Garros by defeating Jannik Sinner in the final. He is the top seed at Queen’s Club and will begin his campaign by facing compatriot Fokina in the first round.
While speaking to the press ahead of the semifinals of the Monte-Carlo Masters this year, Alcaraz mentioned that Fokina had invited him to his wedding as they are “friends” and have known each other for a long time.
“Yeah, he invited me to his wedding. He’s a friend. We have seen each other for a long time already,” Alcaraz said.
The five-time Grand Slam champion mentioned that it is never easy to compete against a friend, but once they step onto the court, the focus shifts entirely to winning.
“He used to play with my older brother when they were younger, as well. I know him pretty well. I’ve played against him a few times. [We have] practised a lot. So it’s going to be interesting. It’s not gonna be easy, never easy playing against a friend, but you know, this is tennis. Once you step on the court, there are no friends,” he added.
Alcaraz and Fokina have faced each other twice on the ATP Tour, with the former World No. 1 winning both matches. Their most recent encounter was in the semifinals of the 2025 Monte-Carlo Masters, where Alcaraz emerged victorious with a score of 7-6(2), 6-4. He then went on to defeat Lorenzo Musetti in the final, claiming his sixth Masters 1000 title and the 18th ATP Tour title of his career.
