Affiri Travis: Tom, congratulations and thank you very much for joining us today. I want to start when I discovered that you have been named NBC Nightly News. What did you feel at that moment? Did you dream before being in this situation?
Tom Lama: Yes, you know, it was a surreal moment. It was incredibly emotional. There was every emotion that you could imagine, happiness, laughter, and anxiety. I mean, there was everything. It was great. It was really great to tell my wife, who was always beside me, and I was incredible, my children too. I mean, we could not tell all of my children because it has not been announced yet. My little young man has a really big mouth. He is only 7 years old, so you know largely. But only after that to talk to my parents, who sacrificed a lot for me. I mean, there were a lot of tears there too, but it was a lot of happiness, and now it’s up to go.
Affiri Travis: Well, it only deserves to go to this big role. We want to note for people, you are not only the anchor, but the administrative editor. So he talked about the type of pressure that expects to take this job, and how do you prepare now?
Lama: Yes, you know the administration editor. It is interesting, because not everyone really knows what it means. So, as a news anchor, you are clearly reading the news, but this, I say, a small percentage of the job. Most functions, maybe more than 90 %, occur before this light and millions of people are turned on and how we put the width together. As an administrative editor, you are working with correspondents and producers on stories. What are the stories inside to cover the questions we want to ask, and the investigations that we want to launch, then we have this wonderful privilege at the end of the show – there Good news tonight. Because regardless of whether you are democratic, Republican, or independent – there are stories that bring us together as Americans. I always want to highlight those stories at the end of the day, because we live in some wild times. But there are still things that bring us together as a nation.
