Tariffs news: President Donald Trump says he’ll delay threatened 50% tariff on European Union until July amid trade war

Washington – President Donald Trump said on Sunday that the United States will delay the implementation of a 50 % tariff on goods from the European Union from June 1 to July 9 to buy time for negotiations with the bloc.

This agreement came after a call on Sunday with Ursula von der Lin, head of the European Commission, who told Trump that she “wants to reach serious negotiations,” according to the American President’s account.

“I told anyone listening, they should do so,” Trump told reporters on Sunday in Moreston, New Jersey, as he was preparing to return to Washington. Trump said von der Lin, “he pledged quickly and to know if we could solve something.”

In a post on social media on Friday, Trump threatened to impose a 50 % tariff on the European Union goods, where he complained that the 27 -member mass was “very difficult to deal with” on trade and that negotiations were “not going anywhere.” These definitions were kicked on June 1.

But it seems that the call with Von Der Leyen is softened on tensions, at least at the present time.

“I agreed to the extension – July 9, 2025 – I had the honor to do that,” Trump said in the social fact shortly after talking to reporters on Sunday evening.

For its part, von der Layen said that the European Union and the United States “are participating in the most dependent commercial relationship in the world.”

“Europe is ready to advance in the talks quickly and decisively,” she said. “To get a good deal, we will need time until July 9.
