New York (AP) – A sailing ship in the Mexican Navy on a good -intentioned global tour of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York on Saturday night, where it picked up its three mails, injuring two crew members and left some sailors hanging from a high use in the air waiting for help.
The mayor of New York City Eric Adams said that the 142 -year -old bridge had managed to significantly, but at least 19 people about the ship need medical treatment after the accident.
Adams announced on social media early Sunday morning, two of the four people who had more serious injuries at a later time.
The reason for the collision was under investigation.
In a scene captured in multiple witnesses of witnesses, the ship, called Cuuhtemoc, can quickly travel to the bridge near Brooklyn of the eastern river. After that, its three voices hit and captured the main bridge period, one by one, as the ship continued to move.
Videos showed dense traffic in the collision period 8:20 pm.
The bowl, which was flying the green, white and red flag and had 277 people on board, then drifted towards the sidewalks that were lining the bank of the river while the spectators were walking away.
Officials said that the sailors could be seen high in falsifying the damaged mast, but significantly, no one has fallen into the water.
Sydney Nidel and Layla Katz told the Associated Press that they were sitting outside to see the sunset when they saw the ship hit the bridge. They looked closely, they saw someone hanging from the ship.
“We have seen a person hanging, and I could not know whether it was just a fog or my eyes, and we were able to enlarge on our phone and there was someone hanging from the belt from the top to at least 15 minutes before they could save them,” Katz said.
Immediately before the collision, Nick Corso, 23, took his phone to capture the ship’s background and the bridge against sunset, and instead he heard what looked like he had loudly picked up for “big branches”. Many shots follow.
He said that people in his surroundings began to run back and erupted “Pandium” on the boat. He later saw a handful of people hanging from the mast.
“I didn’t know what to think, I was like, is this a movie?” He said.
The Mexican Navy said in a post on the social platform X that Cuuhtemoc was an academic training ship. A total of 22 people were injured, 19 of whom need medical treatment.
Brooklyn Bridge, which was opened in 1883, has a main area of 1,600 feet (490 meters) supported by Bergin Building. More than 100,000 cars and about 32,000 pedestrians cross every day, according to the city’s Ministry of Transport. Its path is a major tourist attraction.
City officials said that traffic had stopped after the collision, but allowed the appeal after the inspection.
It was not clear what caused the ship to get out of the ship. The head of the New York Police Operations, Wilson Aramebles, said that the ship has just left the Manhattan berth and was supposed to head to the sea, not towards the bridge.
He said that a preliminary report is that the ship’s pilot lost power due to a mechanical problem, although officials have warned that information was primary. Videos show that a boat was close to Cuuhtemoc at the time of the accident.
Cuuhtemoc – its length is about 297 feet and a width of 40 feet (90.5 meters long and 12 meters wide), according to the Mexican Navy – sailed for the first time in 1982.
The main seller of the ship is 160 feet (48.9 meters), according to the Mexican government.
With the midnight approaching, the broken boat was moved slowly to the eastern river, and it goes under and after the Manhattan Bridge, with the help of a series of boats, before flying on a berth. The spectators continued to gather on the waterfront to watch the scene.
Every year, Cuuhtemoc begins at the end of the classroom at the Naval Military School to finish students training. The navy said this year left the Mexican port of Aquapolco, on the Pacific Coast, on April 6.
I arrived in New York City on May 13, where visitors were welcomed for several days, according to the Mexican consulate. The ship was scheduled to visit 22 outlets in 15 countries over 254 days, 170 of which are at sea.
